My Parental Rights
April 27th, 2009 @ 10:52 am

I have recently been studying my parental rights in our country and have stumbled upon a very disturbing trend of our federal government impeding upon our parental rights. I hope you will read this and get involved by helping to push through “The Parental Rights Amendment.”

Parents play an irreplaceable role in the lives of their children. The vital child-parent relationship has been shown to positively impact a child’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. For generations, the right of parents to raise their children has been continually upheld by Supreme Court doctrine, and deeply valued by millions of American families.

The right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children has been recognized and upheld for centuries. But the tide is turning in our nation. Today, parental rights are coming under assault from judges who deny or refuse to recognize parental rights. Adding further danger to the child-parent relationship, international law which seeks to undermine the parental role is advancing on the horizon. Together, these threats are converging to create a “perfect storm” that looms over the child-parent relationship.

I will share just one of the many disturbing stories of parental rights being taken away. I chose this one because I couldn’t imagine the government telling me how much church I should subject my child to.

A thirteen-year-old boy in Washington State was removed from his parents home after he complained to his junior-high school counselor that his parents took him to church too often (3 times per week). His school counselor encouraged him to call Child Protective Services with his complaint, which led to his subsequent removal and placement in foster care. It was only after the parents agreed to a judge’s requirement of less-frequent church attendance (1 time per week) that they were able to recover their son.

The Parental Rights Amendment will place current Supreme Court doctrine protecting parental rights into the explicit text of the Constitution. Only the Parental Rights Amendment completely eliminates all threats to the child-parent relationship. It is the only comprehensive response to the attack on parental rights across our nation.
